On the 11th of November 2016, ITB was represented at the HEAnet National Conference in Galway by Dr. Anthony Keane and Stephen Sheridan. Anthony and Stephen gave a presentation entitled “DNS: A hole in your firewall” which focused on covert communications that use the Domain Name Service (DNS) as a means to embed hidden messages. The talk outlined the importance of covert channels in the wider context of information security and detailed a number of cases where DNS-based covert channels have been used to ex-filtrate private data. The talked showed the significance of the DNS protocol and its weaknesses in the wider information security context and why cyber security analysts and practitioners need to pay more attention to it in order to truly secure their networks.
